When the Northern Forest Canoe Trail opened up a few years back, I spent a few days working with writer Paul Schneider on a story for the New York Times (and then again, for Canoe and Kayak Magazine), The Magnificent Obsession of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. I kept my lodging expenses to $16.00/day by camping out on an island in the middle of Upper Saranac Lake and, while shooting and recording the sound of loons in an early-morning mist, fell in love with the place.
Today I have my tent out, going back there with my family, for the fun of it. We're canoing in a series of ponds near Follensby Clear Pond. The seven or so pond form a loop we'll complete in a few days.
